PORTLAND,
OR (OPB Radio) - About 1,00 business and political leaders will meet
in Portland for a summit on Oregon's economy Monday. The keynote
address will be given by Governor-elect Ted Kulongoski.
The idea behind the conference is that the latest economic downturn
may change in Oregon's economy as profoundly as the recession of the
early 1980s did. It's being organized by the Oregon Business
Council, a group of executives from 40 of the state's biggest
companies.
It released a report last week saying the state should spend more
energy fostering so-called clusters. Those are niche industries that
congregate in one place. The group also says the state should spend
more money on education and roads, and overhaul the Public Employee
Retirement System.
Senator Ron Wyden says either way, it's an unprecedented gathering
of business and political leaders.
Ron Wyden: We're going to walk out of there with some concrete ideas
on how to move the state forward and grow incomes and create jobs.
The end of the conference will feature incoming governor Ted
Kulongoski, who may hint at what his economic agenda will be when he
takes office in January.
